Dear Friends, Families, and Athletes,

Throughout my life and coaching career, I have always been passionate about diversity in lacrosse, from my playing in the world games to working with organizations like Nation United/Nation United Foundation, Harlem Lacrosse, and USA Lacrosse on the We Stand Initiative.

My coaching philosophy has always been based on modeling the process of success for our youth. That model necessarily includes the value of diversity. It has been proven, throughout my career, that there is a tremendous advantage to pooling student athletes from various backgrounds. The effect leads to a higher level of chemistry and creativity. I continuously witness my players finding new ways to connect and put the ball in the back of the net.

Lacrosse offers unique opportunities, including college. Unfortunately, the sport of lacrosse is underrepresented by athletes of color. Thus, it is an intentional effort in every program I coach to strive for diversity, to model for our youth the value of diversity, and to teach how to use differences as unique, competitive resources.

To Diversity in Lacrosse,

Coach Mike Song

We Stand Initiative

Portola Lacrosse team members are encouraged to participate in the We Stand Initiative, a cooperative effort between Nation United Foundation and USA Lacrosse.

The WE STAND Initiative is a social movement. Our purpose is to create a sense of belonging for all within the sports community by shifting the culture to one that firmly opposes unjust or prejudicial treatment based on racial bias, socioeconomic and familial status, sexual orientation, physical abilities or gender identity.
